Jake Travis is back in the second installment of the Jake Travis series, The Gail Force by Robert Lane. Jake goes undercover for the FBI to expose a corrupt art dealer and murderer, Phillip Agatha. While on Agatha’s yacht, The Gail Force, Jake is distracted by Agatha’s alluring assistant, Christina, and also finds that he has inadvertently put a young woman on Agatha’s death list. Jake is not certain if there is anyone he can trust, and finds that his life and others are in grave danger. It also seems that Jake underestimates just how powerful and ruthless Agatha really is, and by the time he figures out that Agatha is a veritable opponent, it may be too late.

Travis is an interesting and unique character; he gets into scrapes that would, for any normal human being, be impossible to get out of. He does have some friends that help, but the scenarios are not wholly believable. However, they make for some great suspenseful reading.

Lane is an expert in creating horrible villains to keep Travis on his feet; Agatha seems to be the worst of the worst, but up until now, has always come out a winner. The story will keep readers on the edge of their seats, especially since Lane has a distinct writing style that will have readers clamoring for more. There are ups and downs, unexpected turns, and plenty of danger to the likeable characters.

The suspense begins to build at the beginning of the novel, and doesn’t let up until the unexpected dénouement. Lane has emerged as a viable mainstream author of suspense, and his novels will appeal to thriller aficionados everywhere.
