Wine and Chinese Food
Guest Author - Paula S.W. Laurita

What wines complement Chinese food? The wine suggestions offered here will complete the flavors of various Chinese dishes.

Chinese dishes are varied and flavorful. Many carry the heat of of chiles and other spices. There are many wines that will bring out these flavors, creating a new and exciting experience.

A good Gewürztraminer from the Alsace region of France will bring its own spice to pairing. An excellent choice is the Trimbach Gewurztraminer, 2001. Unlike sweet Gewürztraminers, this wine is dry with ripe fruit flavors.

For something very different, try the Vueve du Vernay NV Brut Blanc de Blancs, from the Loire Valley of France. This sparkling wine is fresh, light, with a fuitiness that calls to the heat of your dish. It's a fantastic bargain at $8.

Sometimes, you need a red to pair with a beef dish. You have to be careful. You don't want a big, bold red that will clash with rather than complement the dish. The medium bodied Pinot Noirs are a good partner to beef dishes. There is the Firesteed Pinot Noir from Oregan. The fruitiness goes nicely with Asian spices.

Farther south, in the Central Coast of region of California, another Pinot Noir is produced, that satisfying and classic. The Anapamu Pinot Noir, 2001, is succulunt with a classic melding of fruit and acid. The long finish will hold its own with the flavors of the food.
